Buddy Guy

Blues,Rock

Whether blues guitar legend Buddy Guy is playing a lick behind his back, picking strings with his teeth, “singing with gentle menace or bending new curves into a blue note” (The New York Times), his electrifying live performances showcase his incendiary style that altered the direction of the instrument. A pioneer of electric blues, Guy’s name is as synonymous with the great generation of musicians he played with (Muddy Waters; Howlin’ Wolf) as with the rock titans he influenced (Jimi Hendrix; Eric Clapton). An American treasure with a career spanning six decades, his recent work is some of his richest music yet, confirming that “Guy is the greatest living Chicago bluesman, and one of the most influential guitar players ever” (Rolling Stone).

David Cross

Stand Up Comedy

Irreverent comedian and social commentator David Cross has maintained a relatively low celebrity profile while at the same time working consistently in TV, film, and the live performance circuit, endearing himself to legions of fans. His smart and fearless comedy style is marked by a simultaneous honesty and cynicism that kind of goes beyond satire to somewhere else. His solo work tends to focus on topics of religion, politics, and a total refusal to skirt around any issue. Characterized by his small frame, bald head, and black glasses, his major career accomplishment has been as one-half of the HBO series 'Mr. Show with Bob and David.' Born in Atlanta, GA, he went to college in Boston and started doing stand-up comedy before moving out to Los Angeles. He met Bob Odenkirk while working as a writer for 'The Ben Stiller Show' on HBO and the two joined forces to create the unique sketch comedy series 'Mr. Show' in 1995. With Odenkirk and Cross as the original funders, writers, actors, and executive producers, the show was nominated for several Emmy awards and eventually ended in 1998.

On Friday, August 10th, as part of Sub Pop's 30th anniversary celebration, the night before SPF30 (our free festival and party at Alki Beach on Sat., Aug. 11), we're very proud to present A Night of Comedy From the Cast of Bob's Burgers! Rodriguez

Rock,Folk

Detroit singer and songwriter Sixto Rodgriguez started in the late '60s, playing offbeat, soulful folk-rock that earned him comparisons to Bob Dylan and Love's Arthur Lee. But his career stalled when his record label ran into financial problems. Years later, Rodriguez became something of a cult hero in Australia and South Africa. Recently, two of his albums from the early '70s were reissued.

Erasure

Dance/House,Pop,Electronic

Erasure formed in 1985 out of the departure of founding Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke (who was then one half of Yaz opposite Alison Moyet) and singer Andy Bell. Like Yaz and Depeche Mode, Erasure were a synth-based group, but they had stronger dance inclinations, as well as a sharper, more accessible sense of pop songcraft. Among the duo's hit singles are "Oh l'amour," "Chains of Love," "Blue Savannah," "Stop!," "Love to Hate You" and their cover of ABBA's ''Take a Chance on Me." The duo's latest release, "The Violet Flame," follows 2013's critically acclaimed "Snow Globe," and is the band's sixteenth studio album release.

Brandi Carlile

Rock,Country,Pop

"Everyone needs to be risking something," says Seattle-based alt-country/folk singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. "The Firewatcher's Daughter," her stunning 2015 release - her first for artist-friendly indie label ATO. marked a triumphant return after a three-year recording hiatus, and her strongest, most rock & roll album to date. Since her heralded, genre-defying 2005 Columbia debut, Carlile and her collaborators, Tim and Phil Hanseroth, aka The Twins, have always offered listeners both control and abandon, often within a single song. Her best-known tunes, 2007's "The Story" and 2012's "That Wasn't Me," are dynamic journeys in themselves, encompassing myriad emotions and varied stylistic touches.

Miranda Sings Live ... You're Welcome

Musical Comedy,Cabaret,Solo Performance

"Miranda Sings" is an internet character created by Colleen Ballinger. The character is a satire of increasingly common YouTube videos featuring mediocre or even bad singers who film themselves singing as a form of self-promotion. Miranda is supposedly from Tacoma, Washington, sings comically off-key, and, when confronted by viewers who take the videos seriously, uses the catchphrase, "Haters back off!" The characterization includes facial tics, unusually active eyebrows and a crooked smile. She also wears lipstick drawn beyond all natural borders and often dances stiffly to the music she is performing. Expect special guests, onstage voice lessons, fashion makeovers and dramatic readings of hate mail.
